VirtServer - Licensing in Private Networks
Important Notice for VirtServer Customers
Starting from ReadyAPI 3.62.0, VirtServer 3.29.0, and TestEngine 1.34.0, SmartBear Product Family has deprecated file-based licenses in favor of the ID-based SmartBear License Management (SLM) system. As of October 1, 2025, file-based licenses are no longer issued, activated/deactivated, or supported; all new and updated licenses are managed through SLM. For more information and timelines, refer to the File-based License End-of-Support Policy page.
About on-premises licenses
Starting with VirtServer 3.16 release, SmartBear ID-based licenses are controlled by the License Servers hosted on your premises. Once configured correctly, VirtServer connects to this server to check if a license is available or not. Once a license is available, it will be requested, assigned, and installed.
The term on-premises indicates that the license is controlled by a server running in your private network. This differs from an online license, which is managed by the SmartBear license server available online.
Notes
An on-premises license is bound to the On-Premises License Server. This is the default SmartBear ID-based license option for VirtServer starting with version 3.16.
To move and use the license on another computer, you need to uninstall it from the current one. For details, see Uninstalling On-Premises Licenses.
